One change to the races found in the PH is that while the civilized races of the world each have different ultimate lifespans, they all mature to adulthood at around the same time that humans do. Because that period of growth is constant among the races, it has gone a long way in bringing them together with shared formative periods and experiences. An 18 year old elf is not considered a child, and doesn’t take 80 years longer than a human to develop. The elf, if raised in a diverse community instead of being cloistered, may have grown up alongside, and had friends and rivals among, human, halfling, gnome, dwarf, half-elf, and half-orc peers of their same age group. That said, a cloistered elf might still be treated as young and inexperienced by protective family members for quite a long time.
